In July 2010, the League of Women Voters of San Luis Obispo County Board of Directors established the Sara Horne Award for Voter Service in honor of long-time League member and Voter Service Advocate, Sara Horne.
Sara was president of our League from 2001 to 2003 and briefly in 2010 while the League underwent reorganization. She served as Voter Service Director from 2003 to 2010. While always active and supportive of her local League in all its activities, Sara's true devotion was to Voter Service. In addition to maintaining and increasing the League's traditional candidates' forums and Pros and Cons presentations, she inaugurated the local League's involvement in conducting Voter Service in community services districts and Homeowners Association elections.
In 2022, the Award was changed from an annual award to one given every two years – in the year following an election year. It is given to a League member who has provided outstanding service to the League in the area of voter service. The Award includes a one-year sponsored membership in the League for a person of the recipient’s choice.
In 2019, the Strengthening Democracy Award for Lifetime Achievement was presented to Vera Wallen for her more than ten years of work with League Voter Service and the county election staff, and her dedication to education, public libraries, democracy, and voting rights.
