Committee Spotlight: Government Policy

The Government Policy Committee of the League of Women Voters of San Luis Obispo County works to ensure local government remains transparent, accountable, and responsive to the people it serves. With members who bring a deep commitment to civic engagement, the committee monitors government actions, researches issues, and advocates for policies that protect democracy and expand participation.

A Dedicated Team of Advocates

The committee includes Leslie Brown, Vallerie Steenson, Cindy Marie Absey, Sharon Whitney, Lori Howland, Marlys McPherson, Margaret Frerking, Nancy Welts, Straith Smith-Zanartu, Sue Bonitz, Joanne Schultz, Lorna Glenn, Mary Beth Gallagher, Laurie Meininger, and Michelle Piazza. Together, they strengthen the League’s mission by keeping a close watch on decisions that affect the community.

Monitoring Local Government

Month by month, members observe meetings of the County Board of Supervisors and city councils across San Luis Obispo County. They observe discussions and decisions on issues vital to the League, including voting rights, housing, immigrant protections, environmental conservation, and the quality of civil discourse. Concerns are brought back to the League board and relevant committees for action when appropriate.

Turning Observation Into Action

The committee’s work goes beyond monitoring. In 2024, the committee successfully advocated for a citizen-led redistricting commission in San Luis Obispo County, helping to block efforts to gerrymander supervisorial districts. More recently, the committee has been organizing a panel on immigrant rights to highlight constitutional protections and current threats facing immigrant communities locally.

Looking Ahead

In the coming year, the committee plans to host panels and webinars on topics ranging from recent Supreme Court decisions to the impacts of budget cuts on county services. Members are also engaged in Unite and Rise 8.5, a national League initiative mobilizing advocacy against threats to the U.S. Constitution.

A Place for Volunteers

The committee welcomes volunteers interested in the workings of local government. Roles are available for those who want to observe public meetings, contribute to research, or support events. An interest in civic life and a willingness to learn are the only prerequisites.

Building Partnerships

The GPC collaborates with community partners such as the Diversity Coalition of San Luis Obispo County and the San Luis Obispo Chamber of Commerce to extend its reach and impact. These partnerships strengthen advocacy efforts and ensure a broad range of perspectives are considered.

Through its vigilance, education, and advocacy, the Government Policy Committee embodies the League’s mission of empowering voters and defending democracy—ensuring local government remains open, fair, and accountable to the people of San Luis Obispo County
